Hiring activity related to robotics increased by a CAGR of 73% in the automotive industry since 2020

The global automotive industry witnessed a 73% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to robotics since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 117% year-on-year in 2021, and by 38% year-on-year in 2022.

Notably, architecture and engineering occupations jobs accounted for 35% share of the global automotive industry’s robotics-related new job postings since 2020.

Computer and mathematical occupations drive robotics-related hiring activity

Architecture and engineering occupations, with a share of 35%, emerged as the top robotics-related job roles within the automotive industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 142% year-on-year in 2021 and by 40% year-on-year in 2022.

Computer and mathematical occupations came in second with a share of 22%, with new job postings rising by 199% year-on-year in 2021 and by 75% year-on-year in 2022.

The other prominent robotics roles include installation, repair and maintenance occupations (14% share), and production occupations (12% share).

The top five companies in the automotive industry accounted for 50% of hiring activity

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Dana, Tesla, General Motors, Robert Bosch, and Magna International. Together they accounted for a combined share of 50% of all robotics-related new jobs in the automotive industry.

Dana posted 3,791 robotics-related jobs since 2020, followed by Tesla with 2,577 jobs, and General Motors with 1,390 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.

New job postings by Dana increased by 282% year-on-year in 2021 and by 50% year-on-year in 2022, while those by Tesla increased by 3% in 2021 and by 8% in 2022.

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 66% share of total new job postings since 2020

The largest share of robotics-related new job postings in the automotive industry since 2020 was in the US with 66%, followed by Germany (5%) and Canada (5%). The share represented by the US decreased by seven percentage points from 70% in 2021 to 63% in 2022.
