Insurance is a legal requirement when it comes to motoring in the UK and also provides protection should you be involved in an accident or become the victim of theft.
The latter has been a real problem for van drivers, especially tradespeople, over the last four or five years with people breaking into vehicles to steal tools. But Adrian Flux is doing its bit to try and help while also providing some guidance to help deter thieves.
Helping to keep your tools safe with Adrian Flux DNA+
Launched on January 1, 2025, Adrian Flux DNA+ is given automatically to drivers who take out a commercial van insurance policy with the company.
Customers receive everything they need in the post, including warning labels and traceable solution, to help keep tools and equipment safe.

This includes:
- Clear signage that sticks onto both your van and your tools to deter thieves
- Traceable Adrian Flux DNA+ solution that you apply to equipment to improve the likelihood your tools can be recovered in the event they are stolen
The offering is just one of the many reasons the brand has been winners of the user-voted WhatVan? Insurer of the Year award in 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Ten other tips for keeping your van and tools safe
There are several simple things you can do to also reduce the chances of your vehicle being broken into or taken. A few of the best pieces of advice as as follows:
- Lock your van at all times even if you are at a site unloading gear or filling up with fuel, most theft is opportunistic
- Get an alarm, immobiliser and deadlocks, even if they are not standard. It might cost money but it will likely decrease the cost of your insurance and provide added protection
- A GPS tracker will improve the chance of a van’s recovery if it is stolen
- A solid panel door is much less inviting than a glazed rear window panel which also gives opportunists a chance to see what’s inside your vehicle
- Try to park in a bright, well-lit area - preferably one covered by CCTV
- Invest in your own camera or monitoring equipment at home; many can send footage directly to your smartphone
- Don’t leave expensive tools or other valuable items in your van overnight
- Inexpensive and simple deterrents like a steering lock can put off thieves
- Keep your keys on you at all times rather than leaving them somewhere on site
- Use Adrian Flux DNA+ to label and mark your property
Other tips for bringing down the cost of your van insurance
Actioning the above can help lower how much you have to pay for your premium. While all insurance is based on a number of factors, limiting the risk making a claim will be music to an insurer’s ears.
But there are plenty of other ways you can make some savings that can leave some money in your back pocket for your business or personal use.
Calling a broker like Adrian Flux is a surefire way to make some savings. They can help tailor a policy to your needs and have access to 20 insurance providers to ensure you get the deal that’s the best value for your needs.
Getting a quote at the last minute will also see the price rise quite dramatically as insurers are looking for traits of being responsible and organised. The earliest you can get a quote is around 30 days before your current policy runs out so diarise it and get in touch nice and early to make savings.

It may be more difficult for tradespeople, but for those that work locally or use their vans for recreational purposes, a limited-mileage policy can reduce the amount you pay for your insurance. If you drive less than the average of between 10,000-12,000 miles per year, you can make savings. But make sure you’re telling the truth as this will be checked by an insurer and can invalidate your cover.
There are many other tips that can help keep money in your pocket, including paying your insurance in one instalment if you can, installing a dashcam and making sure you declare any years’ worth of no claims bonus.
