Introduction

The Just Auto Excellence Awards research has highlighted themes and areas of focus across the automotive sector, including a clear acceleration in the development of AI and autonomous technology, substantial investment in electric vehicles, batteries, and charging infrastructure, and the first steps towards the use of sustainable materials and manufacturing techniques.

When it comes to technology, the sector is in line with many others in its current focus on AI, both in the form of driver assists, but also more tellingly in the field of autonomous technology.

Companies are looking at its incorporation into traditional vehicle types, but also the development of fully autonomous taxis and delivery vehicles.

We have seen a clear increase in automotive companies looking at technology solutions outside of the sector and investing in AI startups specifically.

Hand in hand with this is investment in developing branded software solutions, often using platforms from big tech as the base, as the industry shifts into an era of software-defined vehicles.

As the EV revolution gathers pace the clearest trend for automotive manufacturers is the securing of access to battery materials and technology.

Direct investments into battery manufacturing, and into tech companies developing improved battery models have been seen across the board as manufacturers grasp the scale of the transition.

Alongside this there has also been an increased focus on recycling initiatives, with several companies seeing the potential in used batteries, most obviously the extraction of precious metals.

Expanding networks of charging infrastructure and improving charging technology is another clear priority, and it is interesting to note that, unlike with traditional fuels, investment is being seen from several parts of the industry.

While energy and oil companies are leading the charge, automotive manufacturers and component makers are also investing. Even consumer goods retailers are committing funds, grasping the increasing need to offer recharging facilities to customers.

EVs are also influencing the development of in-car technology, as manufacturers see the potential in new interior and cockpit layouts to reimagine information displays and in-car entertainment systems.

Though not increasingly as rapidly, hydrogen technology is another area of focus, particularly for HGVs and other logistics vehicles, with manufacturers developing new power trains and investing in refueling networks.

While the industry has a long way to go regarding true sustainability, green shoots are being seen. The most obvious is the focus several global manufacturers have put on accelerating low carbon steel production using hydrogen fuel.

Such products are already being incorporated into new vehicle models, and a switch away from traditional production is a vital step on the road to net-zero.

Component manufacturers have also begun experimenting with sustainable materials, whether they be used for parts or for interiors, with several companies investing into material science to find alternatives to fossil-fuel based solutions.

We hope our Excellence Awards Report not only provides recognition to those companies at the cutting edge of the industry but also provides a useful snapshot of the industry’s current state.

Congratulations to all our winners.
